The 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination school selection process will officially begin soon, with the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service outlining important guidelines for candidates preparing to choose their preferred senior high schools and TVET institutions.
The Computerized School Selection and Placement System remains a key part of Ghana’s secondary school admission process. Authorities are therefore urging students, parents, and guardians to pay close attention to the approved selection structure to avoid costly mistakes during submission.
How many schools can a candidate select
Under the new guidelines, candidates are required to select a total of eight schools. These will consist of six main choices and two alternative choices. The six main schools must be arranged carefully in order of preference, with the first option representing the student’s most preferred institution.
Education officials also stressed that the first Category A school selected should reflect the candidate’s top priority among the highly competitive schools.
The two alternative schools, which will be selected from Appendix 3, will only be considered if a candidate is unable to secure placement in any of the six main choices.
What are the requirements for the selection of schools
The placement arrangement also requires students to balance both boarding and day school selections. Candidates must choose three boarding schools and three day schools among their six main choices.
Additionally, the guidelines specify that candidates must select one boarding and one day school each from Categories A, B, and C. This approach is expected to promote fairness and improve placement opportunities across the various categories of schools.
Authorities have warned candidates to be extremely careful during the selection process because schools chosen cannot be changed once the forms have been submitted. This means students are expected to seek proper guidance from teachers, parents, and school authorities before finalizing their choices.
The Ghana Education Service further clarified that candidates are allowed to select up to two schools from Category A, consisting of one boarding and one day school. The same rule applies to Category B schools.
However, students may choose all six schools from Category C if they wish, provided the selections include three boarding and three day schools.
The guidelines also provide special direction for students interested in technical and vocational education. Candidates who wish to pursue purely TVET programmes are encouraged to select only TVET institutions from Categories A, B, and C while still following the approved selection structure.
Meanwhile, students hoping to build careers in areas such as Engineering, Medicine, Aviation, Physical Sciences, Astronomy, and other science related professions have been advised to prioritize STEM and Science programmes in all their selected schools.
Education stakeholders believe the latest guidelines will help reduce errors during placement while giving candidates a clearer understanding of how the selection process works.
The release of the school selection instructions comes as thousands of final year Junior High School students across Ghana prepare for the 2026 BECE examinations and the transition into senior high school education.
Parents and guardians are expected to play an active role in helping candidates make informed choices that align with their academic strengths and future career ambitions.
