How Two Armed Robbers Were Killed by Police After Daylight MoMo Vendor Attack in Tema

-

In a dramatic law enforcement response in Tema, Greater Accra Region, two suspected armed robbers lost their lives following a violent robbery attack on a mobile money (MoMo) vendor on Monday morning, April 13, 2026. The incident unfolded in Tema Community 5 at around 8:30 a.m., when the suspects allegedly targeted the vendor under the guise of conducting a cash-out transaction.

According to a statement from the Tema Regional Police Command, one of the suspects, riding as a pillion passenger on a motorbike, approached the female vendor at Aba Fosuah Plaza and requested a transaction. As she went into her bag to retrieve her phone, the suspect reportedly drew a pistol and demanded cash.

MoMo Vendor Struggle With Armed Robbers

The vendor resisted the robbery attempt, leading to a physical struggle with the assailants. During the confrontation, the pillion rider allegedly shot the vendor in the leg, forcing her to surrender the bag containing cash before the duo fled the scene on their motorbike.

Police Swift Response

Nearby police officers from the Tema Regional Operations Unit, who were on routine patrol, received a distress call and pursued the suspects. The suspects, riding a black Royal motorbike (registration M‑24‑GE 778), reportedly opened fire on the pursuing officers near a junction close to Smart Hotel in Community 6.

In the ensuing gunfire exchange, police returned fire, fatally wounding both suspects. They fell from the motorbike and were rushed to the Police Hospital, where they were pronounced dead on arrival. Their bodies have been deposited at the hospital’s mortuary pending autopsy and formal identification.

Recoveries Made By The Police

After the operation, police recovered multiple items believed to link the deceased to the robbery. Seized evidence included a 9mm pistol loaded with ammunition, three mobile phones, assorted SIM cards, a talisman, a Ghana Card later identified as belonging to the victim, the motorbike key, and GH₵11,390 in cash. A spent cartridge was also found at the crime scene.

Condition Of Injured MoMo Vendor

The injured momo vendor is currently receiving medical treatment and is in stable condition, authorities confirmed. Meanwhile, the Tema Regional Police Command has urged the public to remain vigilant, report suspicious activities to the nearest police station, and support efforts to ensure security across the metropolis.

Concerns Over MoMo Vendor Attacks

This incident highlights a persistent security challenge facing mobile money vendors across Ghana. MoMo vendors frequently handle large sums of cash and are often targeted by criminals. Recent police operations in other regions have also focused on robbery networks suspected of targeting such vendors, sometimes with fatal outcomes.

The police’s prompt intervention in Tema, which culminated in the suspects’ deaths, demonstrates a heightened readiness by security forces to respond swiftly to violent crime. However, it also underscores the ongoing need for enhanced protective measures for vulnerable cash handlers in public spaces.
