Wontumi to report to CID today over Akonta Mining probe

Wontumi faces CID today

Bernard Antwi-Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi) is expected at the Police CID Headquarters in Accra at 10 a.m. today, October 6, as investigators advance a case linked to Akonta Mining Limited and alleged illegal mining. His lawyer confirms they will honour the invitation following an Attorney General warning on Friday that non-compliance would trigger an arrest.

Key points as Wontumi faces CID

  • CID appearance: Wontumi’s lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, says they will report to CID this morning at 10 a.m.
  • Attorney General stance: Dr Dominic Ayine says charges have been signed, thus failure to appear would lead to arrest.
  • Purpose of probe: Activities of Akonta Mining, a company linked to Wontumi, under investigation for alleged illegal mining (“galamsey”).
  • Context: Government revoked Akonta’s mining lease in April 2025 amid forest reserve violations. Earlier directives in 2022 said the firm had no right to mine in Tano Nimiri Forest.

Details About Wontumi CID Probe

GhanaView News reports that the Ashanti Regional NPP chairman has been directed to appear before the Criminal Investigations Department today. Though his lawyer called the AG’s public caution “unnecessary,” he affirmed cooperation: “We will be there at 10 a.m. at the CID headquarters.”

Attorney General’s warning was issued on Friday, Oct 3. The case centres on Akonta Mining’s alleged illegal operations, which authorities say have been under review for years.

Wontumi’s Akonta Mining Probe Timeline 2022 – 2025

  • September to October 2022: Lands Ministry and Minerals Commission stated that Akonta Mining had no permit to operate in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve, therefore a halt was ordered.
  • April 21–22, 2025: Government revoked Akonta’s lease, citing violations involving the forest reserve.
  • May to June 2025: Wontumi faced questioning and is later granted bail after related arrests and EOCO actions – separate investigations into alleged financial crimes.
  • October 3, 2025: AG Dr Ayine warned Wontumi will be arrested if he skips CID; says charges are signed.
  • October 6, 2025: Wontumi’s Lawyer confirmed 10 a.m. appearance at CID HQ in Accra.

After today’s CID appearance, investigators could finalize processes leading to arraignment. Any bail or charge decisions will hinge on the CID session and prosecutorial filings that may come afterwards.
