UDS Reaches FISU World Cup Semi-Finals

The University for Development Studies (UDS) is putting Ghana on the map again. At the FISU University World Cup Football Tournament in Dalian, China, they are putting on some impressive performances. The Tamale-based side has stormed into the semi-finals after a dominant 5-2 win over South Korea’s Kyungil University, remaining unbeaten in the competition so far.
UDS Explosive Victory Over South Korea
UDS sealed their semi-final spot with a commanding performance:
- Augustine Frimpong stole the spotlight, netting a hat-trick (goals in the 6ᵗʰ, 52ⁿᵈ, and 72ⁿᵈ minute).
- Alhassan Zakaria contributed a brace, including a free kick, putting UDS firmly in control.
- Despite a late surge by Kyungil with a goal in the 79ᵗʰ minute, Ghana’s defense and goalkeeper Emmanuel Edo held steady with crucial saves in the 58ᵗʰ and 61ˢᵗ minutes.
Road To The Knockouts & Tournament Stats
Many never believed UDS will go this far, however:
- In Group C, they opened with a 2-1 win over University of Sharjah (UAE).
- They followed it with a resounding 4-1 victory against Ramon Llull University (Spain).
- Their last group match was a tough 1-1 draw with defending champs Paulista University of Brazil, which was enough to send them through undefeated.
- So far, UDS has scored 12 goals and conceded 5, boasting the tournament’s most potent attack. Zakaria currently leads the scoring charts with 4 goals in 3 games.
According to coach Ibrahim Tanko, the team is determined to keep pushing and represent Ghana and Africa with pride.
What’s Next – UDS In Semi-Finals
UDS will face University of Granada (Spain) in the semi-final on Friday.
On the other side, reigning champions Paulista University (Brazil) will go up against University Chouaib Doukkali (Morocco).
African representation remains strong, with UDS and Doukkali still in contention. If UDS can maintain form and composure, a spot in the final or even the cup is within reach.
