Police have arrested three men in connection with the alleged mob killing of a 26-year-old Liberian national near the Lashibi area in the Greater Accra Region.
The brutal assault has sparked public concern and prompted diplomatic engagement between Liberian and Ghanaian authorities.
On 27 February 2026, the Sakumono District Patrol Team responded to a distress call reporting that a man had been severely beaten by a group of irate individuals near the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) offices in Lashibi. Officers found the victim, later identified as Austin Tengeeh, unconscious with visible injuries around his neck and head.
Police quickly transported Tengeeh to the Sakumono Community Hospital for emergency treatment. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Authorities believe the crowd mistook Tengeeh for a suspected thief, leading to the violent confrontation. Eyewitness accounts suggest that what began as a minor interaction quickly escalated into chaos, with bystanders joining the assault.
Arrested Culprits
The Ghana Police Service has taken three suspects into custody in connection with the incident. They are:
Francis Amuzu, 44
William Adison, 36
Vincent Adzikah, 34
All three men are currently in police custody as investigations deepen.
Meanwhile, the Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team at the National Police Headquarters has launched a manhunt for additional individuals believed to have taken part in the lynching.
Tengeeh’s body has been deposited at the hospital morgue as police continue to follow necessary diplomatic protocols given his nationality. The Ghana Police Service has stated that the case remains under active investigation.
Moreover, the embassy of the Republic of Liberia in Accra has confirmed that it was informed of the incident on 28 February 2026 and has since been engaging with Ghanaian law enforcement and relevant authorities to monitor developments.
According to embassy statements, officials have been in communication with local Ghanaian police units and members of the Liberian community residing in Ghana. Efforts are underway to officially notify Tengeeh’s next of kin and provide consular support as investigations continue.
Liberian Goverment’s Response
The Liberian government has expressed deep sadness over the death and urged both communities to remain calm while due legal processes unfold. Officials also reaffirmed confidence in Ghana’s legal framework and the longstanding diplomatic ties between the two nations.
Consequently, the attack has raised broader concerns about mob justice and public safety in Ghana. Civil society groups and community leaders have called for accelerated police action to ensure justice is served and deter similar incidents in the future.
While police have made initial arrests, the broader investigation seeks to identify all individuals involved and clarify the events that led to the fatal assault.
The tragic death of Austin Tengeeh serves as a grim reminder of the dangers of mob violence and the urgent need for public education on lawful dispute resolution.
