President Mahama has expressed confidence that Ghana will maintain the depreciation of its currency, the cedi, at less than 5% per year.

In his recent public address on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, President Mahama emphasized his government’s commitment to stabilizing the cedi. He stated that, depreciation is expected to be moderate, rather than sharp or erratic.

Eventhough there is fluctuation with regards to the Ghanaian Cedi recently, President Mahama insists it is part of a natural adjustment process, and not a sign of renewed instability as many may perceive.

President Mahama again stressed on the fact that the Bank of Ghana (BoG) had intervened aggressively in the first half of 2024, when the local currency depreciated by almost 25%. But then, the central bank has since scaled back direct interventions as the cedi depicts signs of stabilising.

“The Cedi is making an adjustment and I believe that it will settle at a certain rate and we’ll make sure that any depreciation that occurs in the value of the Cedi is within a margin of about 5% per annum,” President Mahama added.

President Mahama outlined measures such as tighter fiscal discipline, attracting more foreign investment, and maintaining robust economic governance frameworks, are key in achieving this objective.
