Marry for Love, Not Sympathy –  Rev Daniel Annan Advises

-

In today’s fast changing world of relationships, more women are faced with emotionally complex decisions when choosing a life partner. However, Reverend Daniel Annan believes one principle should never be compromised. Marry for genuine love, not sympathy or gratitude. Speaking on JoyPrime’s popular relationship and lifestyle show, “Let’s Talk”, he offered heartfelt advice after listening to the emotional dilemma of a young lady torn between two men with different strengths.

To begin with, the lady narrated how one man had supported her deeply during a challenging period in her life, particularly throughout her national service. He helped furnish her home, provided emotional and financial assistance, and consistently showed up whenever she needed help. Yet despite his care and commitment, he had not taken any concrete step toward marriage. Meanwhile, another man recently entered her life, who is financially stable, emotionally mature, and very intentional about settling down. Although she felt deeply connected to both, the different ways they expressed love left her confused.

Therefore, reacting to her situation, Rev Annan cautioned women against marrying out of pity or obligation. According to him, marriages built on sympathy eventually lead to frustration and emotional exhaustion. Instead, he emphasized that love, emotional connection, mutual respect, shared values, and commitment should form the foundation of every lasting marriage. He noted that gratitude alone cannot sustain a lifelong partnership. While appreciation is important, it should never be the sole reason for choosing a spouse.

Furthermore, he encouraged women to embrace their independence, confidence, and personal worth. He explained that a woman’s identity should not revolve around what a man provides, but rather around her own principles, dreams, and capabilities. Women, he said, must recognize their power and ensure that anyone who comes into their lives values them for who they truly are.

In addition, Rev Annan highlighted the importance of honesty in relationships. He urged women and men alike not to lead others on out of guilt or fear. If love does not exist, it is better to speak the truth early rather than pretend, as emotional deception eventually leads to regret and heartbreak. He added that clarity and sincerity help build healthier emotional environments.

Speaking further, he explained that choosing a lifelong partner goes beyond financial security. Women should also consider emotional maturity, dependability, and readiness to build a future together. With a touch of humour, he reminded viewers that emotional intimacy, sexual compatibility, and understanding each other’s love language play a significant role in marital happiness.

Moreover, Rev Annan addressed Christian relationships, stating that lengthy counseling sessions are not always necessary when believers already have a strong spiritual foundation. What truly matters is learning practical principles such as communication, forgiveness, and emotional intelligence.

Touching on leadership in relationships, he stressed that a real man does not need to constantly announce his position as the head of the home. Instead, his actions, reliability, and sense of responsibility should reflect leadership naturally. Finally, he encouraged women to seek men who demonstrate Christ-like love. That’s men who can love deeply, forgive genuinely, and lead with compassion.

He concluded by advising the young lady to communicate openly with the first man about her expectations for marriage. According to him, clarity will guide her decision and prevent regret.

Ultimately, Rev Annan’s message is clear; love must be the foundation of marriage, not pressure, guilt, or sympathy. With wise choices, emotional clarity, and self worth, women can build relationships that truly bring peace, joy, and fulfillment.
