Court Jails 2 for Three Months for Illegal Dumping Rubbish near Accra Post Office

Accra Court

GhanaView News has confirmed that, two individuals have been sentenced to three months’ imprisonment with hard labour after pleading guilty to illegally dumping refuse around the Accra Post Office.

The convicts, Albert Okai and Amoako Darko, were each fined 50 penalty units (GHS 600). However, because they failed to pay the fines, the court ordered that they serve the jail terms at Nsawam Medium Security Prison.

A third accused, Michael Osei, pled not guilty and has been remanded in custody for one week ahead of his next court appearance.

The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, called the convictions part of a broader push to enforce sanitation and environmental by-laws within the city. Again, he emphasized that such enforcement is crucial for public health and to maintain a clean urban environment.

This court verdict serves as a warning: those who flout the Accra Metropolitan Assembly’s regulations on refuse dumping may face severe consequences.
