-

The Children’s Support Fund established for dependants of those who perished in the tragic 6 August 2025 Ghana Air Force helicopter crash has now raised more than GH¢10.15 million and US$20,000. This significant milestone reflects Ghanaians solidarity with the families.

Background of The Helicopter Crash

The helicopter, a Ghana Air Force Harbin Z-9EH, crashed in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region, killing all eight people on board, including high-profile public officials such as the Minister for Defence Dr Edward Omane Boamah and the Minister for Environment Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.

About the Children’s Support Fund

The Children’s Support Fund was launched by President John Dramani Mahama on 15 August 2025, during the state funeral for the crash victims. The initiative is designed to provide long-term welfare support to children who lost parents or guardians in the accident.

Significance of the Children’s Support Fund

The core intention of the Fund is to safeguard the education, welfare and health of children left vulnerable by the crash. Organisers have made clear that the resources will be managed to guarantee sustainable, long-term assistance for beneficiaries.

In addition, it was emphasized that support extends beyond immediate financial relief. Other planned use includes educational scholarships, healthcare coverage, and other essential social services that will anchor the children’s future as they grow.

State of the Children’s Support Fund

According to a statement by Dr Valerie Sawyerr, Senior Presidential Advisor on Governmental Affairs and Coordinator of the Fund, contributions recorded between 17 October 2025 and 7 February 2026 brought the total above GH¢10 million.

Donations have been received from a variety of public and private sector contributors. Major institutional supporters include Ghana Reinsurance Company PLC, the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Vitol Ghana Services Limited, the Ministry of the Interior, as well as Kosmos Energy Ghana. Individual citizens and organised groups also made notable contributions, further broadening the fund’s reach.

The Fund had earlier crossed milestones such as GH¢8.6 million by October 2025, demonstrating a steady flow of support since its launch.
