Baba Sadiq Appointed as Ghana’s High Commissioner-Designate to Nigeria

-

President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Baba Sadiq Abdulai Abu as Ghana’s High Commissioner-designate to the Federal Republic of Nigeria. A move that signals renewed focus on strengthening Ghana’s relations with Nigeria. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs officially announced the appointment on 1 March 2026.

The High Commissioner post in Abuja holds significant diplomatic weight given Nigeria’s role as Ghana’s largest economic partner and a pivotal force within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The appointment highlights Ghana’s intent to reinforce political, economic, and cultural cooperation between the two neighbouring countries.

Who Is Baba Sadiq Abdulai Abu?

Baba Sadiq is a well-known Ghanaian media executive, entrepreneur and political figure whose career spans over two decades. He entered public attention primarily through his leadership in Ghana’s creative sector and media landscape. Prior to this diplomatic appointment, Sadiq was the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Okaikwei Central during the 2024 general elections.

Baba Sadiq founded and led 3 Media Networks Limited, the organisation behind influential platforms such as 3Music TV and the annual 3Music Awards, which have significantly shaped contemporary Ghanaian music and entertainment. He also played a key role in establishing digital streaming infrastructure in Ghana through his work with Boomplay Ghana and has been active in media production and strategic communications.

Beyond media, Baba Sadiq is recognised for his entrepreneurial breadth, overseeing lifestyle initiatives and co-founding Muse Africa. He has contributed to civic engagement campaigns and partnered with international organisations to broaden social impact through media and cultural expression.

Why Baba Sadiq was Appointed

Baba Sadiq’s nomination follows the recall of Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, popularly known as Baba Jamal, who had been serving as High Commissioner to Nigeria. Jamal was recalled in early February after deciding to contest the Ayawaso East by-election following the death of MP Nasser Mahama Toure.

The transition reflects a deliberate shift by President Mahama to restore focus to Ghana–Nigeria bilateral ties, particularly in areas of mutual interest such as trade, regional security and migration coordination. Ghana and Nigeria have historically shared a complex relationship, marked by cooperative agreements and occasional regulatory tensions in commerce and movement of goods.

Expectations from Baba Sadiq

As High Commissioner-designate, Baba Sadiq is expected to champion Ghana’s diplomatic agenda in Nigeria, advancing bilateral cooperation in several areas:

Economic and trade partnerships that support business growth and investment flows between Ghana and Nigeria.

Consular services for Ghanaians living or working in Nigeria, including passport and visa facilitation.

Regional security collaboration through ECOWAS frameworks to address shared challenges such as border management and migration.

Cultural and educational exchange programmes that foster people-to-people ties and mutual understanding.

The appointment is still subject to diplomatic approval by the Nigerian government before Baba Sadiq formally assumes duties in Abuja. Once accredited, he will head Ghana’s High Commission, leading a mission that remains vital to economic diplomacy and regional cooperation.
