PNC & LPG Withdraw from Tamale Central By-Election; NDC’s Prof. Seidu Stands Unopposed
The People’s National Convention (PNC) and the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) have formally withdrawn from the Tamale Central parliamentary by-election. Their withdrawal follows earlier decisions by more prominent opposition parties not to contest the seat. Now, Prof. Seidu Mahama Alidu of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) stands unopposed for the seat.
The Tamale Central seat became vacant following the tragic death of MP Dr Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed in a helicopter crash on August 6, 2025. Following that, a by-election date has been set for September 30, 2025.
As reported by GhanaView News earlier, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) declared ahead of the nomination phase that it would not field a candidate.
In a turn of events, both PNC and LPG on September 10, 2025, submitted their nominations but then officially withdrew via letters to the Electoral Commission through their respective general secretaries.
These withdrawals imply that, no opposition party will be contesting Prof. Seidu Alidu for the Tamale Central seat.
Earlier on, Prof. Alidu won the NDC primary, polling 840 votes out of 1,500 valid votes, beating 11 other aspirants. His closest rival, Hanan Gundadow Abdul-Rahaman, a former Chief Executive of the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly, got 536 votes.
The other candidates, who managed only single and double digit figures, were:
- Dr Seidu Fiter Mohammed – 44 votes
- Aliu Abdul-Hamid – 23 votes
- Dr Abdul-Rahaman Abdul-Rashid – 9 votes
- Prof. Abdul-Razak Abubakari – 4 four votes
- Mariama Naama Salifu – 5 votes
- Hajia Shamima Yakubu – 5 votes
- Hajia Mulaika Salisu – 3 votes
- Alhassan Osman Gomda – 7 votes
- Sadat Haruna Alhassan – 9 votes
- Alhaji Alhassan Mbalba – 10 votes.
Now that all other parties have withdrawn, Prof. Alidu is expected to be declared MP-elect, once the Electoral Commission formalises the withdrawals.
