Ghana’s Government to Distribute 7 Million Birds Nationwide Under Nkoko Nkitinkiti Poultry Rollout

-

Ghana’s government has announced its plan to distribute 7 million birds across the country as part of the Nkoko Nkitinkiti poultry initiative under the broader Feed Ghana Programme. This rollout aims to expand local poultry production and reduce Ghana’s reliance on imported meat products.

Date For Nkoko Nkitinkiti Poultry Rollout

It was announced during a regional rollout ceremony in Accra on February 13 by the National Coordinator of the Feed Ghana Programme, Bright Kwadzo Demordzi.

According to Mr. Bright Kwadzo Demordzi, “the target is to be able to produce seven million birds this year. We are recruiting families and commercial poultry farmers from large, small and medium-scale farms. After training and building their capacity, we will distribute seven million birds across the country.”

The Nkoko Nkitinkiti scheme is one of the flagship interventions under the government’s Feed Ghana agenda, a multi-pronged approach designed to enhance food security, boost local agricultural production, and generate employment in rural communities.

Nkoko Nkitinkiti Distribution and Targeted Support

Mr Demordzi highlighted that the distribution will be done in phases. Starting with assemblies in Greater Accra, the programme is planned to extend to the Eastern, Western North, Central, Western, Volta, and Oti regions, ensuring nationwide coverage. Each region will recruit potential poultry farmers, offering them technical training as a prerequisite to receiving birds.

While the headline figure of 7 million birds reflects total production targets, the government is also supporting participants with training and capacity-building resources.

The Nkoko Nkitinkiti initiative is not limited to supplying birds alone. It is integrated with efforts to strengthen the entire poultry value chain, including feed production, processing facilities, and cold‑chain infrastructure to prevent post‑harvest losses.

About Nkoko Nkitinkiti: From Launching to Implementation

Nkoko Nkitinkiti was launched in November 2025 by President John Dramani Mahama in Kumasi. This initiative was conceived as a transformative effort to revitalize Ghana’s poultry sector, which has historically struggled to meet local demand.

At the launch event, the President stated that the programme would help cut down Ghana’s growing annual poultry import bill and stimulate domestic production.

The first phase initially focused on distributing around three million birds with accompanying feed and technical support to beneficiaries. Under that structure, each household received a defined number of chicks, plus guidance on rearing practices to promote success.

Nkoko Nkitinkiti Goals and Economic Impact

Ghana currently imports a large share of its poultry products, costing the economy hundreds of millions of dollars annually. By boosting local bird production and processing capacity through programmes like Nkoko Nkitinkiti, the government intends to reduce this dependence and promote self‑sufficiency.

In addition to food security benefits, policymakers expect increased poultry production to create jobs, particularly in rural areas, and strengthen related industries such as feed supply and meat processing. Investments in cold storage facilities and value‑addition infrastructure further support these objectives.
